Play Time

We’ve been talking a lot about our minds lately so I think it’s time to switch it up some.  Let’s get some action going…do some moving…dance a little…have some fun!!  I don’t know about where you live but here in Tennessee, it’s getting warmer… and that is music to my ears!!  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to be outside!

Sometimes the thought of working out can be a drag….do you know what I mean?  The treadmill or elliptical will sit in the corner and become a catch-all for whatever room it’s in.  And the same for the weight bench.  The repetition of the action is just not sparking your interest today.  That little kid inside is wanting to go run and play in the sun….SO DO IT!!!!

“What are you saying?”  you may ask.  What I’m saying is give yourself permission to go play!  Go find a park and play on the jungle gym or pick up a jump rope.  Join a softball game or flag football.  Play some basketball, tennis of volleyball.  What happened to allowing ourselves to play????  Oh, that’s right,…. we grew up!  Well, guess what…it’s okay to play!  Even if you are an adult!

Maybe sports isn’t your thing.  What about gardening?  You can do a lot of heavy lifting and plenty of walking when you are outside!  I LOVE to garden and can easily get my 10,000 steps in a day when I do.  And some strength training!  It’s a long way from the barn to the front of the house….especially when I have the wheel barrow loaded down with something!!

But you don’t want to work…okay.  Let’s go hiking!  In most parts of the country you will have all sorts of terrain so you can get that cardiovascular system going.   Or if you are lucky enough to live by the ocean, lake or river then go swimming!   I have a couple of  friends who’s thing is dancing.  Now that sounds like fun!

My point is, there are a multitude of things you can do that don’t seem like a workout but you will still be working your body.  Movement is the key.  And get outside!  Sunshine is so good for you!  While too much is not good for your skin, the right balance can help to release mood enhancing hormones like serotonin which can boost your mood and give you a feeling of calmness and being focused.  Research has found that as little as 5-15 minutes of sun exposure on the skin helps it to create vitamin D which helps to develop healthier bones and teeth!  So put that sun block on and get outside!

Let’s find that kid inside of us.  He/she is still there waiting on the adult to let them out!  Can’t you just hear your friend from long ago knocking on your door and asking, “Want to come out and play?”

I hope everyone has a happy and safe summer.  Take advantage of the warm weather and learn to have fun again.  Let me know what you are doing and how you are playing.  Share your ideas with others who come here to visit and as always…..Thank you for stopping by.  Come back soon!

Blessings,

Becky
